We will be selling DOB-kun, a new soft vinyl figure by contemporary artist Mr. Takashi Murakami, produced by INSTINCTOY, in four new colors by lottery sale.
We would like to introduce in detail how DOB-kun was created and the details of this work.
It was around October 2018 when the staff of Kaikai Kiki, led by Mr. Takashi Murakami, first contacted us to discuss the production of a soft vinyl figure. At that time, Kaikai Kiki had already started to produce original soft vinyl figures in Japan, but they were also interested in our company's production and contacted us.
The following month, in November 2018, we were invited to the ComplexCon in Los Angeles, and we went there to experience first-hand the hype of fashion, sneakers, and figures.
At that time, the first soft vinyl work "Kaikai & Kiki" created by Kaikai Kiki was on sale at the event. As a collector myself, I queued up early in the morning to purchase the figure, but even after standing in line for 5 hours, I was still unable to purchase them. As a collector, I was once again keenly aware of the popularity of Mr. Takashi Murakami and experienced the excitement of the venue.
The following year, at the Winter Wonder Festival in February 2019, at Kaikai Kiki's booth there was an actual DOB-kun large sculpture. We were there for a meeting with Mr. Takashi Murakami as INSTINCTOY in discussion to produce this work.
It was my first time seeing Mr. Takashi Murakami's sculpture in person, and I still vividly remember how overwhelmed I was by the perfect finish, which was achieved by his meticulous attention to detail. I was especially drawn to the expression of the eyes. The DOB-kun has a seemingly simple design, but such detailing and finishing adds depth to the overall design and makes it beautiful. I felt that such details and finishes add more depth to the overall design and creates strong attraction.
In creating the soft vinyl figure, I had a strong desire to express the charm I felt in Mr. Murakami's sculptures through a figure measuring 230mm in height for collectors to enjoy.
I made all the parts to be as detailed as possible, especially the eye parts, which are so finely produced that it is hard to believe they are made of PVC.
The color scheme was also thoroughly expressed in the pantone colors provided by Kaikai Kiki.
We faced many obstacles but we never compromised, and after more than half a year's work, the first five colors of the series were completed.
The commemorative 1st series was released on October 7, 2019 from the MOMA store.
Although it was not announced at the time of release, this is a limited edition of 400 pieces of each color edition, making it a rare piece that will not be reproduced, and is now already a hard-to-find collectible item.
The pandemic happened from the end of 2019, which affected us in various ways, including the cancellation of events and the suspension of factory operations. The production of the second series was greatly affected, but we were able to progress little by little.
Finally, in July 2022, we were able to complete and launch the new series!
The new series will be available simultaneously in four colors: Yellow, Camellia Red, Green Green, and Black.
The eye structure and "shadow" coloring, which have been our main concern since the beginning of production, are the points that we would like to draw your attention to the most in this work.

All colors have the best finish following the 1st series.
The first 80 pieces of each of the 230 piece editions were released for pre-sale at Perrotin Store Tokyo in Roppongi on July 8 (Fri.). The INSTINCTOY online lottery sale will sell 100 pieces of each color, applications will be accepted world-wide.

・Customers can send an application form only once. We will not accept more than one application from the same person.
